Olen W. Wiemers

Olen Wilbur Wiemers was born September 7, 1926, the last child of John Wiemers and Ida Schneider-Wiemers. Olen was born at the "old home place" located six miles south of Hondo and near the Hondo Creek. At birth he maxed out the hospital scale at 14 pounds!

Olen spent a lot of time at his home during his childhood with siblings Luella, Ruben, Elgin, and Alvin. Sometimes Alvin and Olen were thought to be twins being just two years apart.

The family moved to town just before Olen married Fay Dell Schweers on June 25, 1949. A short time after Olen and Fey Dell were married, they built their two bedroom home on 28th Street. Children Clifton, Gordon, and Donna soon followed. They were married 62 years.

Olen worked for his brother-in-law, Marvin Schweers, delivering fuel in the Hondo area while Fay Dell worked for Bell Telephone Company. Olen also supplemented his income by working nights at the Hondo Army Airfield. He later took over the Gulf distributorship from Marvin creating the family business, Wiemers Oil.

In 1961, Olen and Fay Dell bought 200 acres along Highway 90 twelve miles east of Hondo and began raising Herford cattle. He later became most proud of his Brangus cattle. The "pasture" was a hit. The work was hard, but the family loved it.

Fun was had going to Medina Lake, having bar-be-ques, going to family reunions, enjoying church, the Masonic Lodge, hunting, family trips to Colorado, going camping, fun at the pasture, fishing trips, and keeping up with his reading.

Olen taught the children and grandchildren to be the best they could be, to always strive to make good grades, and to live their lives as exemplary citizens. Honesty and integrity were very important to him.

Olen died peacefully surrounded by his family at Methodist Hospital on June 29, 2011. He was ready, and he trusted that the Lord God was his Savior. He was very proud and thankful for his family. He is survived by a loving wife, three children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. We will miss him a lot, but we are proud of him and of the legacy he left with us.

Olen is buried at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
