Aalke Wiemers

Aalke Wiemers is the matriarch of our Wiemers family in America.

Aalke came to America in 1855 with her parents. Two brothers, Harberth Gerdes (five years old at the time), and Dietrich Gerdes (infant) died enroute to America. Aalke's mother, Fenne Telken Gerdes, died at age 43 only two years after arriving in America. Aalke's father, Johann Heinrich Gerdes, lived with Johann and Aalke for a year or more before death in 1889.

On June 15, 1856, Aalke married Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Wiemers at Quihi, Texas. Aalke was 16 years of age at the time.

Aalke is described as being low of stature, strong, with black hair. She was of a sweet disposition, almost never angry or cross. She wore black quite often, especially to church. She was an ideal life companion to Johann Wiemers and shared with her husband the trials and hardships of the pioneers of Texas. Hard working and God-fearing people, Johann and Aalke conquered the wilderness with a heroic faith in God
